How powerful are women in the World

Posted by data tz on Friday, July 8, 2016 0

Politics has long been considered as a 'man's world' where men occupy the vast majority of positions as national leaders and members of parliament and cabinets. Today, women still remain significantly underrepresented in both legislative and executive branches. Thus, only one-fifth of the World's parliamentarians and only 53 out of 235 national leaders are women. There are signs, however, that this pattern has begun to change.

Statistics suggests that past gender disparities may be eroding as more and more women rising to positions of power. Thus, for the last two decades, the share of women parliamentarians in the World has doubled rising from 10.8% in 1997 to 21.2% in 2016. African countries witnessed particularly significant progress in empowering women. On the whole, all countries to a greater or lesser extent increased women's participation in politics during the reference period with the exception of only 9 countries, among which North Korea performed worst.
